The main light sources in this scene are the typical fluorescent light fixtures in the library and natural daylight from windows. Key light and fill light are used to a minimal effect, maintaining an impression of a normal high-school library. Throughout the scene, the characters remain well-lit with natural shadows. This puts focus on what the characters are saying, preventing distraction, such as backgrounds. The lighting creates a mood of normality; it is what you'd expect in the setting. In modern cinema, lighting is often manipulated to adhere to dramatic monologues or dialogues. However, that would be very unnatural here. However, the expected lighting creates contrast to Bender's speech. Although what he is saying is unexpected, emotional and abnormal, the lighting and surroundings do not change to accompany that. This treatment emphasises that this is normal for Bender; that this is what he goes through each day. We often expect such personal reveals to be dramatic and outstanding, especially through camera angles and lighting; in this scene, we do not see that, because it would retract from the honesty and bluntness. When Bender makes his exit, the fluorescent lights become more noticeable. This emphasises the environment, and how Bender is feeling; harsh, unforgiving. However, the lighting on Bender himself remains very much the same; neutral and forward-focused.
