Casting, Costumes and props
Here, Bender (played by Judd Nelson) has long, dark brown hair and is nicely combed and wavy that he has to push back by throwing his head back. He wears a long-sleeved white shirt worn underneath a plaid button shirt. He also has a stud on one ear, has on a wristwatch and wears wrist warmers (in which one of them has a badge that says “not punk”). His pants are long and grey and he dangles a chain from the back of them. His black boots are tattered and do not look very new or tidy and almost at once when you see him, he comes across as intimidating, confident and loud. The gloves, the clink of his chains, the baggy clothing and the scruffy boots give us the impression that Bender is a tough, bad-boy. His clothes represent his character ‘Bender’ as a troublemaker student- the intended look. Bender has very defined eyebrows and round eyes that help interpret his emotional messages- in fact, his whole face is very animated and bold. Here, Nelson fits the stereotypical jerk mould to play Bender and he seems right for the character.
Allison has short hair with a long fringe that covers her face down to her eyes. She wears a long black sweater with a dark, spotted scarf. Compared to the bright scenery of the library, she has a dark, ominous look and even though she is in the background her dark presence is obvious. For a few seconds, you can see her with a few sugar straws left in her can of coke, and her sandwich half-eaten and in front of her and wrappers messily lying about. She also has an unfashionable bag on her table. She is played by Ally Sheedy. She looks quite scruffy and ‘weird’. In one scene in the background she is playing with her hands and looks messy. However she is not disturbing and plays well as a background character.
Andrew, played by Emilio Estevez, wears a blue zipper-hoodie that immediately gives the ‘high school jock’ appearance. As props, he is eating a sandwich along with a few more sandwiches and an apple, a banana, a can of coke, a carton of milk, and chocolate chip cookies piled in front of him for lunch. This gives us the impression that he is eating selectively from the food groups and that he is a bit of a health freak. He is very good looking and also has fair features, however has a buff build and also gives off the same feeling as Claire- the popular type.

Brian wears a long-sleeved, dark green shirt and pants along with a wristwatch, and his hair is nicely pushed back up the front. Overall, he is dressed as a plain, average-looking high school student. Anthony Hall, the person playing Brian, has a soft face and light features. He has a small build and also does not look very outgoing. When next to Bender, Brian seems very fragile- like he could be knocked off very easily. This is demonstrated when his hand is smacked by Bender. Brian also moves his hands a lot- either rubbing them together or using them in front of him when he talks- and this gives out a nervous air around him. Also, it seems that Brian looks down often when Bender looks at him in the eye- intimidated however not scared- but it is obvious that he cannot stand up for himself well. Hall does a good job of this.
Claire (Molly Ringwald) wears a simple but pretty pink shirt and also has short, red hair. Usually, the colour pink is used to symbolise a ‘pampered princess’ look. Claire has a very sharp and pretty face and her posture is straight. When she is smirking at Bender giving his imitation, it seems that she thinks that he is somewhat pathetic however amusing.
This gives her a somewhat charismatic look. The audience may interpret this as that she is a ‘popular’ girl at school.
