Visuals and Setting
The scene takes place in an ordinary high school library. It is not unusual in any ways, although there are a few noteworthy structures- the stairs which Bender later retreats to and the unmissable statue behind him in much of the scene. The scene takes place around lunchtime- we see Bender commenting on Brian's lunch. The importance in this bland setting, like the lighting, creates contrast between everyday high school and the deeply personal and impacting implications unfolded in Bender's speech.
Almost all visual focus is placed on the characters; largely Bender, but also the expressions and reactions of his classmates. Bender's body language throughout the scene is consistently firm, angry and deliberate, and at times violent. One of the few times where he slows down is when he almost threateningly walks to Andrew to show a cigarette burn on his forearm. These few seconds show high contrast; when Bender is leaning over Andrew, their shirts contrast greatly; blue and red, calm and angry. Further use of colour in character costume is shown in Andrew and Claire, who are sitting next to each other; Claire wears a pink shirt and Andrew's is blue. This shows a contrast between their stereotypes; the ultimate "masculine" and "feminine" types. Brian's shirt is green; traditionally used to symbolize balance and neutrality as the middle colour of the spectrum, and Allison's outfit is all black, fitting of her status as a flake and outcast. Most of the humour and meaning in Bender's monologues rely on visual cues; from the large, swinging punches, to the fingers raised to cheeks in symbolism of the 'perfect son with a dimpled smile'.
