Music and Sound
Initially there is no background music track, however, the sounds being made by the characters gives the viewer the sensation of actually being in the room with them. It helps them to connect with them. The silence helps the audience focus on what Bender is saying. Also in the scene, there is a lot of natural sound- the sound of the crinkle of the paper bag their dialogue and the clinking of Bender's chains... It is all very natural and this helps the audience interpret the scene as something that has actually happened and is very real.
When Bender is doing an imitation of Brian's house, there is also a very limited variety of sound. All that is heard is Bender with his voice changing to fit different characters in his imitation- Brian, his father and his mother- happy-go-lucky and very relaxed and satisfied with where their lives are at. However after he kisses his 'lovely wife and son' as he plays Brian's father, he makes a vicious sound as he thrusts his fist in a violent manner towards the imaginary family. He does to show that he is jealous of Brian's good life because he would prefer that instead of his own messy, abusive family life.
After the imitation, everyone is silent and Bender's chains clink as he is walking back to his seat. This shows the significance of Bender's presence in the room. He is very loud and without him, the room is quiet.
The background music starts off quiet, than grows louder as Bender starts imitating his own family. At 39:28/02:03 (in the middle of his imitation of his abusive father), there is a gradual monotone played by the lower strings (perhaps just the double bass) that slowly becomes louder. The low note played gives a dark, and a sombre feeling is felt as it gradually becomes louder, it gives the audience a feeling to be prepared- that something is going to happen or that something is coming. It starts to be clearly heard against the background noise in the break between Bender's changes of character (from his abusive father to his abusive mother and himself). After this, the noise is hard to ignore.
Around half a minute later you can hear a few different notes playing as a trill underneath the overlying monotone. At 40:12/02:29 the cymbals come in and clash along when the drums play a bass beat and (what sounds like) the music synthesiser starts playing a low, fast-paced and groovy tune. These sounds start to play when Bender does an impression of his father punching him in the face and fades away to a soft distant 'jam', though still audible. There are a few seconds before anything happens- it is as if an explosion has just gone off and nobody knows what to do. The music is very active and this preserves the feeling of something going off and this is so that everyone is taken aback at both the abusive language and actions of his own family and how it is very unreal- as if anybody would treat their own son like that. They are all looking around uncomfortable in disbelief.
